The Joy of Water

The Joy and Necessity of Water

Don’t forget to increase your water intake this summer!  Not only will it help you get through those hot June days, but it will also contribute to your fat loss.  Why?  Basically, it comes down to this:  Your kidneys cannot function properly without enough water.  When this happens, the liver must take over the kidneys’ jobs and ignore its own.  Well, one of the liver’s primary functions is to metabolize fat.  When the liver is distracted with the kidneys’ extra work, it leaves little time for the liver to metabolize your stored fat.  Remember, not drinking at least 8 glasses of water every day is like not taking a bath for a month for your insides!                  The key to a healthy body and fast metabolism is lots of water!

Protein Alternative

Protein is essential to build muscle, which leads to burning more fat and creating a leaner and healthier body.  But you don’t have to enjoy T-Bone steaks daily to get enough protein.  Did you know mushrooms are called “the meat of the vegetable world?”  They contain several essential amino acids as well as many vitamins regularly found in meat.  Choosing ‘shrooms over steaks has another benefit:  fewer calories and fat!

Losing Weight

Not Losing Weight?

Don’t worry about how much weight you are losing, the important question is how much fat are you losing.  You can only lose about 3 pounds of fat a week and if you lose more you are instead losing valuable muscle.  Lots of us think that by not eating, we’ll lose weight-not so…by not eating we are telling our body to hit starvation mode and it will hold on to fat.  A rule of thumb for calorie intake is add a 0 to your ideal weight.  By eating every 3 hours your body relaxes and gets your metabolism working to give you the perfect body.  Just 30 minutes a day of strenuous exercise will convince your body to begin the work of losing fat.

Alternative to Tanning Beds

Alternative to Tanning Bed Dangers

Shockingly more and more people are getting skin cancer directly related to tanning beds.  Melanoma is on a sharp rise from a preventable cause.  Robert Dellavalle, MD, PhD, assistant professor at the CU School of Medicine and co-author of the study, notes the $5-billion tanning salon industry counts more than 2.3-million United States teenagers among its customers.  Whereas tobacco purchasers in all 50 states must be 18 years of age, only three states have restrictions on youth tanning use, despite widely accepted evidence that youth is the most critical period for UV exposure, elevating skin cancer risk.

“While teens may seek indoor tanning because tanned skin is portrayed socially as beautiful and healthy, they are putting themselves at risk for serious health problems,” Dr. Dellavalle said. “Indoor tanning equipment may cause burns, immune system suppression, drug- and cosmetic-induced photosensitivity and an increased melanoma risk.    The development of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, is associated with exposure to high-intensity UV radiation or exposure to solar radiation at a young age.  The most serious form of skin cancer, malignant melanoma, is expected to be diagnosed in 59,580 persons in 2005.1 Melanoma is the most common cancer among people 25 to 29 years old.  UV rays from artificial sources of light, such as tanning beds and sun lamps are just as dangerous as those from the sun, and should also be avoided.

There is a healthy alternative to tanning beds called Airbrush tanning. Angie McCarl, owner of Fitness Spa says, “our Airbrush tans are the first in Georgia to use this fabulous formula made from aloe and sugar beets. It’s so safe you could drink it!  We offer the customer a golden tan without the risk of cancer.  In just 30 minutes you can have a beautiful tan.  Since Airbrush tanning is not a booth, we spray it on with no streaking or orange spots.”

Airbrush Tanning is one way Americans are keeping their skin save from deadly UV radiation.   For more information on airbrush tanning go to www.ptcfitnessspa.com or call 770-632-3595.

Fast Fat Loss

The Perfect Cardio Program For Fast Fat Loss

Fat loss is always a problem because there are so many restrictions in the diet you decide to take and so many exercises to do that it makes it impossible right? Wrong! Fat loss isn't easy but it isn't hard either, there are several factors that you must have in order to make your fat loss goal possible:

A Goal: You must have a goal! If not how would you know you've reached your actual fat loss goal? But remember, make it a real goal, don't expect to drop 50 lbs in a month.

Time of Exercise: The time you do your Cardio has a big influence in the way you'll burn fat, the best time is when you wake up and you haven't eaten anything, the body will burn much more fat if you do it at this time because it will have to take from the fat reservoir since you haven't eaten anything to take energy (Fat) from directly. Cardio can also be done when recovering from a lifting session, since the body is still burning calories you can take advantage and start your cardio there and burn twice as much.

Caloric Intake: Caloric Intake has to be moderated in order for you to burn fat, it's quite easy, and the key in losing fat is to burn more calories than you consume, the recommended caloric intake for a day is 2,000 but this can vary depending on your bodyweight. But for losing fat you may need to consume a range of 1,200-1,500 calories a day.

Daily Fitness

                                                          Daily Fitness

If you are stuck in a rut of not exercising, try something new.  Many find the idea of a journal helpful for challenging them to excel.  Start a fitness log and list everything you do.  Each day challenge yourself to a new activity and list how long you did the exercise.  Walking farther, lifting weights, or doing an exercise circuit all give you excellent benefit.  It is your workout, so make it your own.  Have confidence that you will be healthier and happier with all your efforts.  By keeping a journal you will have pride in each days accomplishments.  Add stretching as part of your exercise to release the lactic acid build up.  If lactic acid is released by stretching, you will never be sore from your workout.  How great is that?

Toxins

                                                          Dangerous Toxins Among Us

It only takes a half a tube of toothpaste to kill a child!  Toxins are everywhere.  Did you know that fluoride was used as a pesticide until the government decided it was too dangerous for human exposure.  So what did they do with all the excess fluoride?  They dumped it in the water supply and toothpaste and called it tarter control for teeth.  Here is the kicker…fluoride causes gingivitis!  Now they are even selling bottle water for children with added fluoride!

Once toxins get into the body, they stay there.  Chemicals such as DDT, which have been banned for 30 years, are still regularly found in urine samples.  It is important to detoxify the body and cleanse it of these harsh chemicals.  There are many ways to detox the body beginning with special teas to cleansing spa treatments.  One of the best ways to detox the body is by using zeolite drops, which will remove toxins and even metals such as mercury.  The next step after you have started your detox program is to limit the number of toxins coming into the body.  Start eating only organic foods and shop at health food stores for natural body care products like shampoo, deodorant  and soap.  It is necessary to be aware of the toxins that surround us daily.

Confidence Becomes You

“Always bear in mind that your own resolution to success is more important than any other one thing."
Abraham Lincoln

Losing weight is challenging at the best of times, but with poor self-esteem it becomes even more difficult. If you do not think you deserve to look and feel good, why bother? When you have confidence and high self-esteem, you naturally believe that you deserve to look and feel better. To gain this self-confidence, congratulate yourself for small achievements, and believe in your ability to eventually achieve your long-term goal of permanent weight loss with a strong, healthy body.

Mollie’s Health Tip of the Month

An article in the Wall Street Journal “The Case Against Vitamins” fascinated me that said recent studies show that many vitamins not only don't help, they may actually cause harm.

By TARA PARKER-POPE
March 20, 2006; Page R1

“Every day, millions of Americans gobble down fistfuls of vitamins in a bid to ward off ill health. They swallow mega doses of vitamin C in hopes of boosting their immune systems, B vitamins to protect their hearts, and vitamin E, beta-carotene and other antioxidants to fight cancer. It's estimated that 70% of American households buy vitamins. Annual spending on vitamins reached $7 billion last year, according to industry figures. But a troubling body of research is beginning to suggest that vitamin supplements may be doing more harm than good. Over the past several years, studies that were expected to prove dramatic benefits from vitamin use have instead shown the opposite.”

Even the American Cancer Society is not endorsing vitamins; they are instead recommending whole food supplements. The whole food supplements we love are the 17 fruits and veggies in the capsules of Juice Plus. We have now been on Juice Plus for a year and no one in my family has been sick. My mother is off of her asthma medicine and we all feel great. For a $1.37 a day, Juice Plus is a clear winner!

The Saving Power of Water

We all know drinking lots of water is important to our health, but do you know how important? New research shows that drinking large amounts of water is as important in the prevention of coronary heart disease as daily exercise, a healthy diet full of fruits and veggies, or not smoking. One researcher commented that not drinking enough water could be as harmful to your body as smoking! Sodas and other fluids were tested as well but made no impact on improving the prevention of disease. Drinking only natural, pure water will keep your body young and healthy. Unfortunately, tap water contains so many different chemicals like chlorine and arsenic in order to make it drinkable that it can actually be harmful. Come by FITNESS SPA and we can help you find a wonderful water purifier for your faucet, shower, and even your entire house!

Healthy Tips

EAT COLORFUL! Americans eat too much white food such as potatoes, rice, flour, white sugar, milk, cheese, white bread, and white pasta. Why is this dangerous? They can cause chronic killer diseases! 4500 independent studies show that fruits and vegetables can reduce your chance of getting cancer, but not only cancer. The people who ate the most fruits and vegetables had ½ the least occurrence of cancer, heart disease, and stroke.

50 grams of fiber is what is recommended to clean the body of carcinogen, however, most Americans get only 5 grams of fiber. Low fiber is connected to breast cancer, colon cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Every single fruit and veggie is loaded with fiber; just a cup of blueberries has 15 grams of fiber!

Today, the average person in the U.S. lives for nearly 78 years. But scientists estimate that the maximum potential life span of the human body is roughly 120 years. The oldest living human alive today is believed to be 122. Keeping a great quality of life means eating colorful fruits and veggies.

Mollie McCarl's 7 Simple Ways To Reduce Cravings

1. Remove foods from every room in the house except the kitchen (no candy dishes in the living room, no chocolates in the top dresser drawer, and no snacks in the car's glove compartment or on the desk at work).

2. At parties and social events, after you have eaten, stay away from the room with the food.

3. When shopping, avoid the aisles with candies and desserts stay with the healthy fruits and vegetables. Shop only in the outer aisles.

4. At home, serve reasonable portions of food in the kitchen and bring the plates to the dining table. Don't put serving bowls or platters on the table. If you really want seconds, go back into the kitchen to get them.

5. If you must have treats in the house, don't buy them in bulk packages. Instead of buying a half-gallon of ice cream (or low-fat yogurt), buy single servings such as pops, cones or cups. It is more likely that you'll have a large serving of ice cream without thinking about it than it is that you'll go back to the freezer and get a second treat without thinking about it.

6. When eating out, ask the waitperson to take the bread away as soon as possible.

7. Resign from the Clean Plate Club. Even if it feels a little uncomfortable, leave a small amount of food on your plate to help unlearn the association between the sight of food and eating.
